2 things about culture:
- its taught ( it must be learned )
- it is always changing
The process of teaching culture is socialization it has 2 parts
- its how we develop a sense of self
- what we are learning about culture
parts of culture: 3. norms 4. values 5. sanctions 6. language
socialization is how we teach and we learn culture
if self is coming from what you learn regarding culture then how much of who you are is you vs how much of who you are is a reflection of your culture.
if i was born in the stone age i would not like computers nearly as much as i do now
nature vs nurture the debate says there has to be one or the other which has influence over who you are
because this is sociology class we will be much more interested in the nurture part. Sociologists say that both are important in terms of who we are.
Heredity can provide a blueprint for who you can be / whats possible, but then nurture can come in and redraw lines, take away, add to.
it can be argued that without language you dont have culture and with out culture you are not human
