When each of the 46 chromosomes is duplicated for cell division
, it remains attached to the new copy. These are called sister chromatids
.
The sister chromatids created by the duplication of the maternal and paternal homologs can also be paired, forming a pair of duplicated homologous chromosomes.
While only two chromosomes are shown here, all 46 chromosomes undergo replication and remain attached to their sister chromatids.
